The Challenge
Impact-Proof Walls for a Working Yard
Metal recycling is hard on yard infrastructure. Loaders push scrap into stockpiles all day, and the walls holding sorted material take repeated impact. A wall that shifts or loses a block is a safety problem, not just a maintenance one.
4G Metals runs recycling operations across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria. At its Kemps Creek yard in western Sydney it needed more usable ground, walls to keep sorted metals apart, and bunkers around its shredder. It wanted to build them quickly with its own crew, without holding up a working yard, and keep the option to extend as the layout settled.
The Solution
Built In House, in Two Stages
4G Metals started in June 2026 with 581 Interbloc® blocks across the 600 and 1200 series, then a further 90 blocks in July. The first stage built retaining walls that won back usable ground across the yard, and separation bays to keep sorted metals apart.
4G managed the build largely in house. Its own crew placed the blocks with Interbloc® lifting eyes and the machinery already on site. There is no formwork, no reinforcing to tie and no curing time, and the interlocking keys locate each block on the one below, so the walls went up fast and true without specialist installers. On the east-west runs the crew buried a course below ground for extra embedment.
In August, with the first stage already working, 4G came back for the shredder bunkers. Envirocon® priced the full design and supplied 188 blocks across the 600, 1200 and 1800 series, with 84 RB16 fixing kits. The fixing kits anchor the bunker walls to the concrete slab. Around a shredder, where loaders work hard against the walls every day, that is a safety measure: if a loader strikes the wall and dislodges a block, the kit stops it toppling.
The Result
One System, Two Jobs
859 blocks enabled 4G gained more usable ground, separation bays for sorted metal and anchored shredder bunkers, all built by its own crew on its own programme.
The walls stay flexible. If the yard layout changes, blocks can be lifted out and reset without demolition. At the end of their life on this site they can be dismantled and reused, not crushed.
One system did both jobs: retaining walls to make more room, and bunkers to work against. The walls went up with 4G's own crew. They can come down the same way.
Why Interbloc® for Recycling Yards
Built for Loaders, Ready to Move
Interbloc® blocks are large, interlocking precast concrete units. They build retaining walls that turn unused or sloping ground into working yard space. They form bunkers and bays that take loader impact. They stack without mortar, formwork or curing time, so a yard crew can build them fast with its own equipment. Fixing kits anchor the walls where machinery works close by. They can be moved, extended or reused when the operation changes.
